It’s very easy to get webspace for just about anybody with an internet connection. There are many sites that host websites for free, because they’re funded by ads from companies who buy space on a page for banners or pop-up ads. For people who are very serious about having their websites be ad-free or controlling the ads, the option exists to buy their own webspace. The pros to this option are that ads won’t show up on your webpage unless you sell the space yourself.
With this freedom to have webspace, people can post just about anything they want on the internet. People can post anything from photo albums to personal websites containing information about anything they want. This presents a problem when it comes to people who are doing research online; while doing research online, it’s always important to make sure that the information you are collecting comes from a reliable source and not from a personal website that’s not reliable.
Before the invention of the internet, this kind of public and anonymous free speech wasn’t possible for anybody to have. People could post things outside or in newspapers, but not nearly as many people ad as much access to such postings. Things posted on the internet are made available to everybody all over the world, so individuals can have a greater worldwide public impact. |
